Division of tulips

Since there are well over ten thousand varieties they were divided into 15 groups. The division was done on the basis of time of flowering, origin, and above all according to morphologic characteristics. However, the groups are changing. Only twenty years ago Virdiflora and Fringed did not exist but there were Mendl and Darwin tulips. And beforehand there was for instance Duc van Tol that got just about altogether forgotten. Flowering described below obviously depends on climatic conditions, primarily on whether the winter season proceeds normally (end of frosts in February/March).
The current classification includes the following groups:

Group 1 - Single early tulips. First to flower, not counting botanical varieties ( for example Pulchella Violacea). Plants reach the height of 25-30 cm. Due to their early flowering they are perfect for forcing. A hybrid of Duc van Tol and Mendl.

Group 2 - Double early tulips. Timing of flowering and height similar to group 1. The difference lies in the shape of the flowers, more precisely in the much greater number of petals, which reflects in the shape of inflorescence, non-typical - elongated.

Group 3 - Triumph tulips. They reach the height of 40-50 cm. Flowering at the turn of April. The petals very often have a light edge. A hybrid of single early and Darwin.

Group 4 - Darwin hybrid tulips. Like Triumph they flower towards the end of April, beginning of May. They are noticed for their height (50 - 60 cm) and large flowers. Originated from Darwin and Fosteriana tulips.

Group 5 - Fringed tulips. WRecent variety that had quickly became immensely popular. They distinguish themselves by finely frayed edges of petals. They flourish in May and reach various heights up to app. 50 cm.

Group 6 - Viridiflora. Flourish towards the end of May, grows up to 30 - 50 cm. Characteristic by green streaked and striped petals.

Group 7 - Lily flowering tulips. Flower in the second part of May growing up to 40 - 50 cm. Large flowers with sharpened petals. Originate from T. retroflexia and Darwin.

Group 8 - Single late tulips (Cottage). They are distinguished by growing very tall, they flower in the middle of May. Particularly appreciated in this group are the black tulips. Flowers are small or large (depending on variety).

Group 9 - Rembrandt tulips. Flower in the second half of May. Characterized by striped petals. Speckles are caused by viruses, the stripes are however regular. They are hybrids of Darwin and Breeder.

Group 10 - Parrot tulips. Grow up to 40 cm, flower in the second decade of May. The flowers are frayed but the edges are coarser, not fine as in Fringed group.

Group 11 - Double late tulips. Higher than earlier varieties and flower later - middle of May.

BOTANICAL

Group 12 - Kaufmanniana tulips. The varieties originate from T. kaufmanniana. Flower early - March, rather small - up to 15 - 30 cm. They are characterized by a triangular blotch on external leaves - predominantly red.

Group 13 - Fosteriana tulips. Originate from T. fosteriana. Flower in April reaching the height of 30 - 40 cm. Particularly ornamental in the second stage of flowering when petals expand sideward creating large rosettes.

Group 14 - Greigii tulips. Originate from T. griegii. Flower in March/April and grow up to 20 - 40 cm. They have characteristic leaves - creased with red stripes.
